Let It Ride : The Cleaner Episode Review
October 13th, 2008 · No Comments
Jimmy Alvarez (“Jimmy A”) is a renowned jockey who has spent his career winning races, no matter what it takes. Even if it means swallowing pills like candy in order to make weight and manage his pain. But lately, his addiction has begun spiraling out of control – his behavior is unpredictable, and his wife approaches William Banks ;the Cleaner for help.
William agrees to take the case not only for her, but for Saul, a man William recognized at the stands and with whom he clearly has a past connection. William rallies his team with Akani and Swenton working in the stables, and Darnell working security (he’s reluctant to be near the racetrack, and William doesn’t push him, a former addict himself).
The plan is to swap out Jimmy A’s pills with lesser-potent diet pills manufactured by Swenton; the team will make “the grab” once Jimmy is more manageable. Once the plan is put into motion, and Jimmy is brought to one of William’s “safe houses”, it becomes apparent that this will not be a typical “grab”. Jimmy A’s kidneys are failing and William explains to Mrs. Alvarez that he may not be physically able to race again.
Mrs. Alvarez is unhappy faced with the possibility that she may be losing her glamorous lifestyle, and tells William that racing is Jimmy’s life and he’ll never stop riding no matter what the consequences. While Jimmy is detoxing, William tells him about his own experiences in rehab; “At some point, I looked up and all I saw was you,” he says, “…I’d never seen anything that graceful before…” Jimmy is then visited by Mr. O’Hurley, boss and owner of Dandelion Wine (the horse Jimmy is scheduled to ride in an upcoming race).
O’Hurley tells Jimmy that Dandelion Wine will be ridden by another jockey while Jimmy is in rehab, news that clearly upsets him. Jimmy A. manages to escape the rehab and makes it to the stables in time to take up his mount in time for the race, but not before visiting a veterinarian for an injection of some unknown substance. William confronts Mrs. Alvarez about Jimmy A’s escape, and she tells him that Jimmy A. is human, and if he wants to ride, that’s exactly what he’ll do.
A conversation between William and Mr. O’Hurley reveals that Dandelion Wine is being put out to stud after this race, and there’s lots of money riding on whether or not the horse wins. O’Hurley said exactly what he needed to say to Jimmy in order to motivate him to get on that horse. As Jimmy is exiting the stables on his way to the starting gate, William tells Jimmy that he was played, and that he doesn’t have to run the race if he doesn’t want to. Jimmy responds that he wasn’t played, that everyone is going to win in this equation.
The race begins, and Dandelion Wine is lagging at the beginning, but comes from behind for the big win. As Jimmy sits upon his mount in the Winner’s Circle, basking in his victory, he suddenly appears ill, and falls off the horse and dies. William realizes that Jimmy A. knew going in that this was to be his last race. He also struggles with the fact that not everyone can be saved. At the end of the episode, you find William speaking with Jorge, Jimmy A’s protégé, a junior rider.
William tells him that he learned from the best; Jorge hands William a bottle of pills, saying that perhaps he learned too much from Jimmy. Jorge asks William for help, and William agrees, an opportunity to prevent another senseless death.

‘Here Comes The Boom’ Episode Review from ‘The Cleaner’

‘The Cleaner’ Episode Review – ‘Here Comes the Boom’ (Caution: Spoiler Review)
This is an episode from the A&E show Cleaner which stars Benjamin Bratt as William “The Cleaner” Banks an interventionist who tries to help people off drugs. He struggles to do this while trying to hold his family together. This is because of the strain on them from the time that he was an addict.
The plot of this episode starts with Ray junior, the son of the first person William tried to help showing up at his shop. William learns that the boy’s mother had died from an overdose but had a number of years clean. The boy also tells William that he is in the foster system and his father, Ray senior, has been released from prison. You find out as the show evolves that William was responsible for this happening because the father was in the house with drugs when William picked up the mother for an intervention.
The son asks William to help keep his father clean. The father has a job cleaning cars at a lot and is trying to stay clean even though he’s having troubles with his bills. However he learns that his son is going back in the system because his foster parents are moving. He wants to be able to provide his son with a home they can share. This pressure causes him to fall back with his motorcycle gang and agree to go on a drug run.
William finds out the metal worker that rigs the gas tanks for the gang has been picked up and uses this to make an entry. He convinces the gang that one of his men can rig the tanks for their motorcycles. This gives him an in and helps in keeping an eye on the father.
While trying to do this things stay in flux at home for William Banks. William’s daughter is talking about a spelling contest his son blurts out that he is quitting football. William is the coach of the team and tells him no. The next day William stops his son and a friend on their way to school to confront him about it, but while trying to talk to him gets a call about the case and has to leave. To rebel the son throws footballs through a building’s windows and waits to be picked up.
Back to the car cleaning drug addict, William finds out the father has started smoking crack again and tells two of his people to watch for him at the gangs club. These are Swenton (Esteban Powell) who rigged the tanks for the gang and Darnell McDowell (Kevin Richardson) a recent addition to the team. Swenton defies William’s orders and tries going back into the club to see. The gang is suspicious and starts questioning him, pistol whips him and forces him to smoke some crack. Swenton tries to avoid it because he’s one of the people William had helped in the past.
The climax comes when William tries to rescue Swenton and reveals that he was the cause of the Ray senior’s prison sentence. With the gang holding guns on William and Swenton the son Ray junior bursts in holding a gun. He tries to get them to let William and Swenton go explains that he was the one who wanted them to help his father. He gets so desperate that he is going to lose everything he tries to shoot himself.
William stops him and Ray senior calls for the gang to stand down because he is going with William. During the end of the show you see snippets of the father going cold turkey. Swenton smoking more crack and them breaking down and asking Akain for her help even though he has always made fun of her in the past saying she receives all of the best jobs.
Finally you find out that William’s son Ben has disappeared which has his wife frantic. They have the police looking for him, although by the end of the show Williams’s daughter tells him she got a text and Ben is safe, but she won’t say where. The show ends with William crushing a rock of crack that had been dropped by Ray senior earlier in the show that William was looking at and considering.
